Amazing Det. Grace DePompo Gives Her Finest for WalkAmerica

NEW YORK, NY, APRIL 28, 2002—Volunteers for WalkAmerica showed their dedication to saving babies even in the cold and pouring rain.  Grace DePompo of the New York City Police Department has two healthy children of her own and cares deeply about the March of Dimes mission. This year, to motivate her co-workers to sponsor her again, Det. DePompo planned to carry out an extraordinary feat:  kayak across New York harbor from Staten Island to the tip of lower Manhattan, jog up the West Side and across Central Park to the start of the Greater New York WalkAmerica, then walk the 10-mile route . . all on the same day!

As it happened, after a difficult hour in the water, the kayaking adventure was curtailed by the rough weather conditions. The NYPD Harbor Unit transported Det. DePompo to lower Manhattan, where, undeterred, she immediately changed into her jogging gear and conducted her run through the city streets. She completed the event still smiling, along with thousands of other volunteers.
