March of Dimes Hails Senate Passage of the Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Prevention Act

Washington, D.C., October 3, 2002 — The March of Dimes applauds the Senate for its unanimous approval of the Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities Prevention Act of 2002, S. 2980. The Foundation especially commends Senators Christopher Bond (R-Mo.), Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), William Frist (R-Tenn.), Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) and Judd Gregg (R-NH) for their leadership on this important initiative that addresses a series of issues central to the mission of the March of Dimes and critical to the health of children across this country.

S. 2980 reauthorizes the activities at the National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The work of the March of Dimes is closely aligned with the Center's mission, which is to promote the health of babies, children, and adults by identifying the causes of birth defects and developmental disabilities, and by promoting health and well-being among people of all ages with disabilities.

“The Senate’s passage last night of S.2980 is a critical step in reaffirming the national commitment to these objectives,” says Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes.  She added “the March of Dimes calls on the House of Representatives to approve S. 2980 and send it to the President for his signature.”
