Kmart Breaks Historic Fund-Raising Record for the March of Dimes

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 19, 2000 – The March of Dimes announced today that Kmart associates and customers set a fund-raising record of $5.37 million in support of WalkAmerica 2000, earning the retailer recognition as the #1 national WalkAmerica team for the 16th consecutive year.
In addition to walk sponsor dollars, Kmart raised more than $4.4 million through a paper sneaker promotion at Kmart stores across the country. Kmart is in its eighth year as the national retail sponsor and over the years has contributed more than $30 million to support the March of Dimes.
"Kmart associates are making a difference in the communities where they live and work," said Dr. Jennifer Howse, President of the March of Dimes. "In addition to the continuing success of Kmart’s annual paper sneaker promotion, the Kmart WalkAmerica team also experienced a dramatic increase in the number of walkers nationwide, helping to heighten awareness of the mission of the March of Dimes."
WalkAmerica, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in April of this year, is the nation’s oldest walking event and the March of Dimes’ largest fund-raiser. Funds raised through WalkAmerica support the foundation’s mission to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality.
