TV Superstar Cristina Speaks Out on Prenatal Care for Healthy Babies

The ‘Hispanic Oprah’ Appears In Television and Radio Public Service Announcements for the March of Dimes

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., SEPTEMBER 3, 2002—Cristina Saralegui, star of the immensely popular The Cristina Show, is being featured in new 30-second television and radio public service announcements (PSA) for the March of Dimes on the importance of prenatal care and preconception health, it was announced today.

Cristina, whose Emmy-award winning show is based in Miami, Florida and carried on the Univision Network, the nation’s leading Spanish language television network, said she is honored to assist such an important cause.

“The future of our children is our biggest concern," says Cristina.  “Today, thanks to organizations like the March of Dimes that offer valuable information to young women and mothers-to-be, many serious birth defects may be prevented. I’m proud to support the March of Dimes efforts to reach out to Spanish-speaking people throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe."

The PSA states, in part, “Practice a healthy lifestyle, don’t smoke or drink alcoholic beverages.  Eat a balanced diet and take the B vitamin folic acid every day.  If you have questions about pregnancy, call the March of Dimes, the organization that fights for the health of your baby."

Cristina’s TV spots will air on Univision, which reaches more than 90 percent of Hispanic households in the United States. ‘The Cristina Show’ is the number one rated talk show on Spanish-language television with an estimated worldwide audience of more than 100 million people. The show is carried on Univision’s 1,161 nationwide affiliates in the United States and is seen throughout Latin America and Europe.

The radio PSA will also air periodically on the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation. The spots will run in Spanish and will tie-in with Hispanic Heritage Month, which is observed from September 15 through October 15, 2002.

“We’re delighted to have this opportunity to work with Cristina,” says Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes.  “She’s a superstar to so many people, and especially to those in the Hispanic community.  The March of Dimes has educational materials and a Web site in Spanish, as well as Spanish-speaking health information specialists at our toll-free phone line.  We’re grateful for Cristina’s help in reaching out to Spanish-speaking women, men, and families with our message about the importance of good prenatal and preconception care.”
